Carcinoma Colon- Synchronous Lesions





Definition : Occurrence of two or  more primary tumors identified in the same patient and at the same time.

   The most voluminous synchronous cancer is called "index" cancer.

   Synchronous Lesions are caused by 
                                  common genetic and environmental factors.

   Overall incidence of synchronous colorectal cancers 
                                   varies between 2% to 10%.

   Hence a complete colonoscopic work up is indicated in every case.

    Thanks a lot for all your effort...

    I think the definition has to be revised one more time, because synchronous lesion may appear up to 6 months after the diagnosis of the first lesion and still to be called synchronous..

    What are the causes of this kind of carcinoma? Can high blood glucose level be one of those? Maybe then using blood glucose meters would be a step forward in realising cancer in one of the primary stages?
