Ryles Tube for Nasogastric Aspiration



Ryles Tube is manufactured from non toxic PVC .

It is transparent tube with opaque line marked at 50,60,70 cm.

Closed distal end with Stainless Steel balls sealed into the tube.

This is to make the tube radio opaque.

Length : 105cm

Sterile & Pyrogen free.

Size : FG 8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22 & 24

Indications

  • To drain gastric contents,
  • To decompress the stomach,
  • To obtain a specimen of the gastric contents
  • For the Assessment of GI bleeding
  • Early Enteral Feeding
  • Acute pacreatitis
  • Acute Cholecystitis


Absolute contra indications

Absolute contra indications of Ryles Tube Insertion in Surgical patient –

1.Base of skull fracture   (Fracture Cribriform plate disruption)   due to the possibility of inserting the tube intracranially.

2. Corrosive Acid poisoning


n  Procedure of Introduction

1. Explain the procedure and obtain consent

2. Sit the patient in a semi-upright position

3. Examine the nostrils for deformity or obstructions

4. Measure the tubing from the bridge of the nose to the earlobe, then to the point halfway between the lower end of the sternum and the navel.

5. Lubricate 2-4 inches of tube with lubricant (e.g. 2% Xylocaine)

6. Pass the tube via either nostril, past the pharynx, into the oesophagus and then into the stomach

7. Instruct the patient to swallow and advance the tube as the patient swallows (sipping a glass of water)
   If resistance is met, rotate the tube slowly while advancing downwards. Do not force
   Stop immediately and withdraw the tube if patient becomes distressed, starts gasping or coughing, becomes cyanosed or if the tube coils in the mouth

8. Advance the tube until the mark is reached. Check the tube's position & secure the tube with tape

How to Confirm that Ryles tube is in position inside the stomach?

1.Introducing a small quantity of air into stomach

2. X-rays: will only confirm position

3.Testing pH of aspirate: gastric placement is indicated by a pH of less than 4.
