Types of Pre Operative Preparations for Surgery
There are 5 Types of Pre Operative Preparations before doing a Surgical Procedure.
1. Psychological Preparation
In any surgery the surgeon who does the procedure should explain the need for the surgery for the patient.
All the risks involved as well as the benefits of surgery should be explained to the patient.
This is very important in case of surgeries like Mastectomy, the surgical removal of whole breast.
2. Skin Preparation
Skin preparation involves the removal of hair in the area selected for surgical incision.
Usual method of removal of hair is by Shaving. Hair can be removed also by applying Epilation cream.
The ideal time of shaving before surgery is on the day of surgery.
If shaving is done one day prior, the chances of bacterial proliferation in the minute cuts created can occur.
3. Nursing Preparation
Nursing Preparation includes the placement of an intravenous cannula, and to carry out the pre operative orders advised by the surgeon.
4. Pharmacological Preparation
Pharmacological Preparation includes the administration of Prophylactic antibiotics, anxiolytics, proton pump inhibitors etc.
5. Bowel Preparation
Some surgeries especially in the colon demands bowel preparation in the form of enema, diet control etc…
