                    A Case of Umbilical Granuloma


Case Capsule
22 years old male presenting with recurrent episodes of discharge from the umbilicus. Diagnosed to have Umbilical Granuloma. After pre operative evaluation patient was posted for surgical excision of the granuloma. Per operatively there was a cyst with patent urachus leading to the dome of the urinary bladder. Complete excision of the cyst was done. Urachal tract was divided and ligated away from the cyst. No Meckel’s diverticulum was found. Defect in the umbilical ring repaired with No 1 Polypropelene.

Causes Discharge from Umbilicus
1.     Omphalitis ( Inflammation of the Umbilicus)
2.     Patent vitello intestinal duct-associated with Meckel’s Diverticulum
3.     Patent urachus-connects to urinary bladder
Raspberry Tumour or Umbilical Adenoma
  It is a tumour like condition usually seen in infants due to unobliterated vitello intestinal duct. Usually associated with Meckel’s diverticulum. Treatment is Umbilectomy.
Other Swellings over the Umbilicus
1.     Sister Mary Joseph’s Nodule

2.     Para umbilical Hernia

3.     Endometrioma in women of age 20-45 years

4.     Omphalith or Umbilical Calculus
