Performance Score of A Surgical Patient


Performance score of a patient is an indicator of the performance of a patient to a particular disease or treatment.
It is used to grade the functional impairment of the patient.
Commonly used scoring system used to assess the Performance status of  a patient  is Karnofsky Scale.
It is expressed as 100 – 0
Lower the score, lower the survival chance.

Score 100- Normal individual
Score  90- Minor Signs and symptoms of illness
Score 80-Can perform normal activities with effort
Score 70-Care for self only
Score 60-Requires occasional assistance
Score 50- Requires considerable assistance and frequent medical care
Score 40-Disabled
Score 30-Severely Disabled
Score 20-Very Sick
Score 10-Moribund
Score  0- Dead

Another scoring system for performance Status is ECOG Scale
(Eastern Cooperative oncology Group Scale)
Here the grades are from 0-5
Grade 0 is fully active
Grade 5 is dead

( Minimum score – is the healthy individual in ECOG Scale
Minimum Score-  is for the Dead in Karnofsky Scale )
