Hypersplenism, Splenomegaly and Accessory Spleens

A Case of Hypersplenism with Accessory Spleens

Difference between Hypersplenism and Splenomegaly

Splenomegaly – is the mere anatomical enlargement of spleen. There need not any functional impairment.

Hypersplenism - is a condition in which the function of the spleen is abnormal.  For example there may be associated increased destruction of the platelet resulting in low platelet count.

Low platelet count is a risk factor for Cerebro Vascular Accidents and increased Gastro Intestinal Bleeding.

The treatment for Hypersplenism is Splenectomy-surgical removal of spleen.

During Splenectomy for Hypersplenism on should look for Accessory Spleens.

Accessory Spleens if present ,should be removed by excision between  ligatures or clamps.

Usual locations of Accessory Spleens are the Splenic Hilum, Splenic Ligaments and the Greater Omentum.
